Few watches are as instantly recognizable as the Casio calculator. At around $40, it’s an easy addition to any collection. But beyond its iconic look and affordable price, how does it actually perform?
In this Casio CA-53W Watch Review, we take a hands-on look at the calculator watch to see just how well it delivers.
A True Retro Classic You Can Actually Wear
After spending a week with the Casio CA-53W calculator watch, it’s clear that this model is about more than just nostalgia. It’s lightweight, practical, and packed with useful features.
For under $50, the Casio CA-53W digital watch includes:
- Perpetual calendar
- Dual time zone tracking
- Alarm
- Calculator
- Stopwatch
- 5-year battery life
Even today, the calculator watch is hard to beat in terms of value. But considering this watch was introduced in 1988, long before smartphones or smartwatches, the CA-53W gave wearers convenient tools on the go that we take for granted today.

Still in 2026, if you want more functionality than a traditional watch without buying a smartwatch or being “plugged in”, the CA-53W is a fantastic option. Even better, you don’t need to spend thousands on a GMT, chronograph, or perpetual calendar. Plus, the long battery life means minimal maintenance and no need to reset the watch every time you rotate through your collection.
Comfort and Wearability During Testing
Compared to other Casio and G-Shock models I’ve worn, the resin strap does feel a bit flimsy. However, this watch is lightweight and comfortable. It’s one of those watches you can forget you’re wearing when you’re not looking at it.

Despite a calculator being built into the case, it’s surprisingly not bulky. On my 6-inch wrist, it sits flat and unobtrusive, making it easy to wear all day.
Big Features, Small Buttons
To get a calculator to fit comfortably on an average wrist, some sacrifices have to be made, and it should be noted that the buttons on this watch are quite small. While fun to play around with, it was easy to accidentally press the wrong button and mess up a calculation. This also made setting the time slightly tedious, as I had to cycle through a few extra times after hitting wrong numbers. I wouldn’t recommend depending on this watch for any complex calculations.

Still, it’s important to remember that these features are more fun than serious tools. But considering the price of around $40, it’s impressive how much functionality you get.
How to Change Time on a Casio Watch
The process for setting the CA-53W is straightforward once you learn the button layout.
- Press the top right mode button until you reach the main timekeeping or second time zone mode.
- Hold the bottom right adjust button until the digits start flashing. This button is recessed so we recommend using a pointed tool or toothpick to reach it.
- Use the calculator buttons to input the correct time.
- Press the bottom right adjust button again to confirm.

It may take a few tries, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes quick and intuitive.
Easy to Learn (After a Quick Tutorial)
Admittedly, I had to watch a couple of tutorials before mastering all the functions. But once I understood the layout, the watch became simple to use. Each button is clearly labelled, and the side buttons allow you to cycle through features and adjust settings easily.
Strap Compatibility and Customization
Although designed for the OEM resin strap, the Casio CA-53W calculator watch is compatible with standard 20mm straps. This opens the door for unique strap combinations and personalization.

Keep in mind that lug clearance is tight, so thicker bands or NATO-style straps won’t fit. However, drilled lug holes make strap swaps easy, and swapping straps can dramatically change the look of the watch.
I paired it with a yellow CTS strap for a brighter look and to match the yellow accents on the case. A peak watch nerd moment.
Are Casio Watches Good?
Casio watches have earned a “god-tier” reputation among watch collectors. After trying this model alongside the F91-W and F108WH, it’s easy to see why. You really can’t go wrong with a Casio, especially at this price point. Casio has built a reputation for durability, affordability, and reliability, and the CA-53W is no exception.
They may not be “luxury”, but they’re dependable, fun, and functional. Casio proves that quality doesn’t have to come with a high price tag.
Alternatives in the Calculator Line
If resin isn’t your style, metal calculator watches like the CA-500WE-1A offer a more premium feel while keeping the same retro charm. Though slightly more expensive, these models are still affordable at around $90 and maintain that classic Casio vintage watch aesthetic.

Final Thoughts
After testing the Casio CA-53W-1, I can confirm it’s absolutely worth it if you like the style. It’s lightweight, practical, and packed with features that still feel impressive today.
From its nostalgic appeal to its unbeatable value, the Casio calculator watch continues to earn its place in collections, proving that a watch doesn’t need to cost much to make a big impact.
The design hasn’t changed much since its release, and that’s part of the charm. It’s unmistakably 80s, and proudly so.
If you’re looking for something fun, functional, and undeniably retro, at $40 the Casio CA-53W is hard to beat.
