The 8 Best GMT Watches for Travelers and Collectors

For frequent travelers and watch enthusiasts alike, few complications are as practical as the GMT. A GMT watch allows you to track multiple time zones simultaneously, making it ideal for international travel, remote work, or keeping up with friends and family across the world.

Today there are options at nearly every price point, from budget watches to luxury pieces. This guide highlights seven of the best GMT watches, ordered from most affordable to most expensive.

What Is a GMT Watch?

A GMT watch is a timepiece designed to track two or more time zones at once. It typically features an additional fourth hand or “GMT” hand that rotates once every 24 hours instead of the standard 12 hours.

This hand works together with a 24-hour scale on the dial or bezel, allowing the wearer to monitor a second time zone while the traditional hour and minute hands display local time.

The concept became famous in the 1950s when Rolex introduced the GMT-Master for international airline pilots. Since then, the GMT has become one of the most useful and popular complications in watchmaking.

How to Read a GMT Watch

Learning how to read a GMT watch is quite simple once you understand how the extra hand works.

  • Local Time: The main hour and minute hands display your current time zone.
  • GMT Hand: The additional hand points to a 24-hour scale to indicate the second time zone.
  • 24-Hour Format: Because the GMT hand rotates only once per day, it distinguishes clearly between daytime and nighttime hours.

For example, if the GMT hand points to 20 on the 24-hour scale, the second time zone is showing 8 PM.

Many GMT watches also include rotating bezels, allowing the wearer to track a third time zone if needed.

  1. Are you sure that diamond encrusted Navitimer is only $8K?
I think that is the price for the non bling model. I love how it looks. It makes me want to learn how a slide rule works so I could pretend I need to use that bezel to calculate fuel consumption, or whatever it’s for.
I have bought dozens and dozens of your straps. No other site compares.

    1. You’re right, it’s the non bling model that’s 8k. Beautiful watch and will always be a classic!
