The Timex Expedition Field watch has long been one of the most accessible entry points into classic field-watch design. With prices around $50-100, this affordable field watch series promises rugged looks and everyday practicality without asking much of your wallet.
I spent a full week wearing and testing the Timex Expedition Field TW4B325009J to see how exactly it holds up to other field watches and budget watches I’ve tried.
First Impressions & Wearability
Right out of the box, this Timex Expedition watch delivers the full field-watch experience in a compact package. As someone with a smaller wrist, I appreciate that Timex offers expedition watches in smaller case sizes. This 36mm watch wore comfortable on my 6-inch wrist and never felt bulky or top-heavy.

And because of its modest size and low price point, this watch is a great candidate for introducing a younger wearer to watches. It’s tough enough to handle daily use, while still offering a classic aesthetic rather than something toy-like.
Timex has long focused on making watches for every wrist, and the Expedition lineup reflects that inclusivity, with case sizes ranging from a compact 26mm all the way up to 45mm.
At just $50, this is no-doubt a solid and respectable field watch.
Dial, Legibility & Indiglo
The off-white dial with large Arabic numerals makes this Timex Expedition field extremely easy to read at a glance. Legibility is exactly what you’d expect from a field watch. It’s clear, practical, and uncluttered.

The lume on the hands is strong as well, but the real standout here is Timex’s Indiglo. With the push of the crown, the entire dial lights up evenly, making nighttime visibility effortless. It’s truly one of the most practical low-light solutions in watchmaking, especially at this price.
That said, when compared to more premium field watches like the Hamilton Khaki, the dial does show its budget roots. It lacks some depth and refinement, but that’s somewhat expected at this price point.
Case & Build Quality
The brushed stainless-steel case feels durable and well-finished for a watch in this price range, and the watch certainly takes inspiration from the Hamilton Khaki King with the crown guard design.

Water resistance is rated at 50 meters though there’s no screw-down crown. This isn’t a watch meant for swimming, however, it works perfectly as a casual outdoor or everyday watch. Rain, hand washing, and light splashes won’t be an issue.
Quartz Movement & Accuracy
This Timex Expedition uses a quartz movement, which brings excellent accuracy and zero maintenance headaches. As someone who swaps watches frequently, I love how convenient quartz can be. No winding, no setting, just grab and go.
That said, one thing I forgot about with budget quartz watches is the ticking sound. During the day, I found it completely unnoticeable, but at night it was loud enough that I had to move the watch off my nightstand. If you’re sensitive to noise, that’s something to keep in mind.
Still, the accuracy is excellent—especially compared to my Hamilton Khaki, which is overdue for servicing and currently running 5 minutes fast. From a purely practical standpoint, quartz wins here.
Strap & Upgrade Potential
The watch comes on a NATO strap that fits the Expedition’s military-inspired aesthetic perfectly. The green strap even matches the army-green index at 12 o’clock, which is a nice touch.

However, the stock strap can feel a bit itchy over long periods. Thankfully, the 18mm lug width and neutral dial color make this an easy watch to upgrade.
If you’re looking for a Timex Expedition watch strap replacement, swapping to a more premium NATO, like our Seat Belt Single-Pass strap or One-Piece Explorer Strap with Deployant Clasp is a worthwhile upgrade that instantly makes the watch feel more refined without breaking the bank. This versatility is one of the biggest strengths of Timex Expedition watches overall.

What It’s Not
This is not a Timex Expedition automatic, solar, GMT, titanium model, and that’s perfectly fine. If you’re looking for features like solar charging, a GMT complication, or higher-end materials, Timex offers those elsewhere in the Expedition lineup at a higher but still affordable price. There are truly a ton of Expedition Field options to choose from.
Final Thoughts & Recommendation
This Timex Expedition field watch is a solid choice for anyone with a smaller wrist looking for a budget-friendly field watch with classic styling. It’s practical, legible, accurate, and is a fantastic choice for new collectors or those who want to add a field watch to their rotation without spending much.

If your goal is the ultimate budget beater, something like a Casio or G-Shock will still offer more durability and functionality at a similar price, but there’s something nice about getting a traditional analog field watch for under $100.
This is why Timex continues to matter. They consistently deliver accessible versions of classic watch styles, such as field watches, divers, dress watches…etc., at prices that welcome new enthusiasts into the hobby. As an alternative to fashion watches, Timex offers better value, heritage, and a lot more authenticity.
For what it is, this Timex Expedition watch delivers exactly what it promises as a sub $100 field watch and it’s a watch I certainly enjoyed wearing.
