The Makoto Watch Company was a brand that really caught my attention at the Vancouver Timepiece Show. Among the many microbrand watches on display, the Makoto Kodawari stood out with its incredible finishing, refined proportions, unique use of real stone dials, and affordable price. So as you can imagine, I was super excited when they sent a couple out for us to review.

This Makoto watch review covers my hands-on experience with the Meteorite and Lapis variants which we’ve spent the last few weeks testing.
First Impressions: Japanese–inspired design at an affordable price.
The first thing that struck me about this watch was the polishing. The Kodawari’s case finishing takes inspiration from Japanese brands like Grand Seiko and Kurono Tokyo, offering crisp lines and polished surfaces you don’t always see at this price point.

Makoto’s attention to detail is evident throughout the design as well, from the transitions between brushing and polishing to the elegant case curves that catch light beautifully. This was a watch people noticed on my wrist, including my non-watch collector friends and family.
Stone dials that stand out
Makoto offers a range of unique watch dial options, each featuring real stone dials. We tested the Meteorite and Lapis Lazuli models though the Meteorite version quickly became my favorite. This was partly because I’m a huge space nerd, but also because the grey tone is versatile and easy to pair with a wide range of watch bands.
I paired the meteorite dial with a blue sailcloth strap with white stitching and kept the Lapis version on the original bracelet.

Makoto currently offers the Kodawari in 6 variations:
- 2 models in 37mm: Blue Turquoise, Pink Mother of Pearl
- 4 models in 39mm: Malachite, Lapis Lazuli, Red Agate, Meteorite
Although the 39mm version felt balanced on my 6-inch wrist, the 37mm size is definitely preferable for smaller wrists. Hopefully they add a 37mm meteorite dial variation down the road!
Specs at a glance:
- Miyota 9015 movement
- 50m water resistance
- 20mm lug width (19mm for the 37mm size)
- Quick release spring bars
- Lug-to-lug: 47mm (44.5 for the 37mm size)
- Case thickness: 10mm (11.25mm including the glass)
- On-the-fly adjustable bracelet

How the Specs Compare at This Price Point
At this price range, many microbrand watches use more basic movements or cut corners on finishing, but the Kodawari stands out with its respectable Miyota 9015 movement, higher-end polishing, real stone dials, and on-the-fly micro-adjustment bracelet. The 9015 is well-known for its reliability, thin profile, and smooth sweeping seconds hand, making it a popular alternative to Swiss movements at a more accessible price point. Altogether, the Kodawari is an excellent value for anyone seeking a unique and robust everyday piece.
Bracelet & Strap Options
I must say, the OEM bracelet feels fantastic. Makoto went with a brushed and polished President-style design that feels premium and well-constructed. It has screw links for easy sizing and quick release spring bars for easy strap changes.

And for those who like to change up their look, the 20mm and 19mm lug widths are compatible with a wide range of watch straps, from leather to rubber to nylon.
Price & Value
Makoto Watch Company is based in Ontario, Canada, and the Kodawari sells for $766 USD or $1,079 CAD. For the finishing quality, unique stone dials, and movement choice, the value is impressive.
Is It a GADA Watch?
You’ll often hear enthusiasts call certain pieces “GADA watches,” but what is a GADA watch? GADA stands for Go Anywhere, Do Anything, a term used for watches versatile enough for nearly all everyday situations.

The Kodawari certainly fits into the GADA category. It’s dressy enough for formal settings but casual enough for weekend wear. With 50m of water resistance, it can handle hand-washing, rain, and daily tasks, though it’s not suitable for swimming. If you want something sportier, consider Makoto’s dive models like the Hakusan or Hamana.
Final Thoughts
The Makoto Kodawari watch combines premium finishing, natural stone dials, and a reliable automatic movement making it a standout choice among microbrand watches in its price range. It’s a versatile yet unique watch that can easily be dressed up or down, and one that seems to attract compliments, plus the unique dials make fantastic conversation pieces.
If you’re looking for your next watch, the Makoto Kodawari is absolutely worth a look.
