Root Beer Bezel

One of the few Rolex bezels to be nicknamed after different kind of sodas, the Root Beer GMT is arguably one of the only brown dials I’d happily add to my personal collection. The combo of brown and gold on a GMT Master works remarkably well, and it’s seen its share of knock offs over there. Variants of the Rolex GMT Master basically make up half our list here, but I’d argue that Root Beer GMTs are safely the least common of the bunch.

Pepsi Bezel

Once again a Rolex classic that’s been adopted by a number of different brands (affordable fans will all remember the Seiko SKX007 and the new Seiko PADI versions of the Turtle. The combo of blue and red is a mighty sharp one, and it’s always a solid addition to anyone’s watch collection. If you’re looking for the ultimate option, one of the original bakelite-bezel Rolex GMT Master 6542 is the year be-all-and-end-all of Pepsi bezels.

Coke Bezel

In the beverage world Coke is ALWAYS better than Pepsi, but somehow the black and red variant of the GMT bezel has never been quite as popular as its red and blue sibling. It’s been copied by Steinhart, and even an odd TAG Heuer back in the day. Unlike the Pepsi, the Coke bezel is no longer in production by Rolex these days, though there has long been speculation that a ceramic Coke bezel GMT will eventually come to fruition.

Sandwich Dial

Most commonly seen in the Panerai catalog, though also used by a number of brands big and small, a sandwich dial is one of the coolest dial style out there. Basically by sandwiching two dial layers together, a level of depth is created that often includes some pretty spectacular lume. The latest Omega Seamaster 300 uses one, as do both current offerings from Oak and Oscar.

Phantom Dial

Stealth is the name of the game when it comes to Phantom dials. These sleek black-on-black creations have come to us from all over the industry, including my personal favorite from Bell & Ross. That said, Rolex custom king George Bamford has created his share of blacked out creations over the years.

Snowflake Dial

Snowflake dials come in two very distinct and different versions — one from Tudor, and the other from the Grand Seiko catalog. In the case of the Tudor snowflake, the name is actually more of a reference to the slightly snowflake-shaped hour hand than anything else. In the case of the Grand Seiko Snowflake, a stunning dial texture reminiscent of a fresh snowfall is the reason this gem earned its nickname.

Pie Pan Dial

Recently revived via the new (and just plain gorgeous) Omega Globemaster, the Pie Pan dial looks a lot like it sounds. The dial has creases at each hour indices, and the outer edge curve downwards. Though the style has been used by a number of brands, the Omega Constellation from the ‘60s is one of the most recognizable of the bunch.

Nipple Dial

Of the weirdest dial nicknames out there, the Nipple dial was a peculiar creation of the ‘70s that saw tall pyramid-esque indices with smaller lume plots that — you guessed it — sorta look like little nipples. They’re the kind of thing that really isn’t for everyone (lume fanatics look elsewhere) but their weirdness is cool in its own way. Of the ones we’ve spotted during our research, this crazy minty solid gold blue dial 16808 nipple dial is the one I’d be chasing, budget permitting of course.

Stella Dial

Another gem of the ‘70s that was never expected to be a hit, the Stella dial was originally designed for the Middle Eastern market but quickly found a following globally. The Stella dials use brightly colored lacquer and enameling to variants of the Datejust and Day-Date. Sadly there are a ton of fakes out there, so you’re going to have to hunt very carefully to ensure you don’t land on a fake dial.

Batman Bezel

Rolex’s BLNR Batman gets its name solely on account of using a Cerachrom bezel in the Dark Knight’s classic colors. I’d safely argue this is THE best looking modern Rolex out there right now, as it combines a GMT complications with the subtle application of color that’s more interesting than going for a plain black alternative. It’s also still under-the-radar enough that you can wear it just about anywhere and with just about anything. The cool part? There’s a Seiko Turtle in the same colors out there — the SRP787.

Kermit (Rolex Submariner 16610LV)

Affectionately named after everyone’s favorite green Muppet, the Kermit Submariner celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Sub back in 2003. The green aluminum bezel paired with a classic black dial caused a stir at the time, but it’s since aged like fine wine. Unlike the Hulk (more on that in a second), the Kermit keeps the traditional Sub look but throws in just enough color to make it stand out. And yes, it’s a favorite among collectors for good reason.

Hulk (Rolex Submariner 116610LV)

The Hulk builds on the Kermit’s anniversary DNA but takes full advantage of Rolex’s Cerachrom bezel technology and a sunburst green dial that shifts dramatically under different lighting. It’s a modern Submariner through and through — louder, brighter, and engineered to stand out.

Bart Simpson (Rolex Submariner 5513)

Yes, there’s a Rolex Sub with a dial named after The Simpsons’ spiky-haired son — and no, it’s not yellow or blue. The Bart Simpson nickname actually comes from a very specific dial variation of the Rolex Sub where the coronet logo is flatter and kind of stubby, resembling Bart’s iconic hairstyle. It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it detail, but for vintage nerds, spotting a Bart is a badge of honor.

Blueberry — Rolex GMT Master 1675

An ultra-rare piece of Rolex folklore, the Blueberry GMT features — you guessed it — a solid blue bezel insert. Rumor has it they were made in tiny numbers for Middle Eastern military contracts in the ‘70s, and as a result, legit ones are basically unicorns. Because of their rarity and sky-high collector value, most of the “Blueberries” floating around today are sadly aftermarket inserts. Proceed with caution — and a loupe.

Tuxedo Dial

Tuxedo dials are defined by their sector-style layout, typically featuring a contrasting outer minute track and a lighter central disc. This design creates a visually balanced dial with classic symmetry, often seen in vintage dress watches and modern reissues aiming for refined formality. It’s the kind of dial that looks like it knows which fork to use at a six-course dinner — and probably judges you if you don’t.

Rolex Clint Eastwood

The later versions of the Rolex Sea-Dweller ref. 1665, produced from 1977 until 1982, are also known as the “Great White,” due to all-white text that replaced the preceding red writing.

The Rolex GMT-Master II 126718GRNR (yellow gold) and 126713GRNR (two-tone steel and gold) are nicknamed the “Guinness” for their black and gold Cerachrom bezels, resembling the colors of the famous Irish stout.

Rolex Hulk

The “Hulk” is the nickname given to the Rolex Submariner ref. 116610LV, named so for its green ceramic bezel, matching green dial, and beefier Supercase shape.

Rolex Ice

Paved entirely in diamonds, the GMT-Master II ref. 116769TBR is aptly nicknamed “Ice.”

Rolex James Bond

Rolex John Player Special

Yellow gold vintage Daytona watches with black bezels and dials are commonly nicknamed the “John Player Special,” after the black and gold JPS Formula 1 livery.

Rolex Kermit

The Rolex “Kermit” refers to Submariner models with green bezels and black dials. There are two that go by this nickname: the Submariner 16610LV with a green aluminum bezel that was released in 2003 and the brand new Submariner 126610LV with a green ceramic bezel.

Rolex Nipple Dial

The Rolex “Nipple” dials are specific dial styles found on some vintage gold and two-tone GMT-Master and Submariner watches, characterized by raised gold hour markers filled with luminous material.

Rolex Padellone

The Italian word for “large frying pan,” “Padellone” is the nickname given to the vintage Rolex ref. 8171 triple calendar moon phase watch. It was called this because its 37mm case size was considered very large during its era, which ran from 1949 until 1952.

Rolex Paul Newman

The “Paul Newman” describes a very particular vintage Daytona dial style with contrasting dials and Art Deco font, named so after it was discovered that the actor wore one. The most expensive Rolex is Paul Newman’s own Daytona “Paul Newman,” which sold for $17.8 million at auction.

Rolex Pepsi

One of the most popular Rolex nicknames out there, “Pepsi” is the name given to the iconic blue and red bezels of the GMT-Master and GMT-Master II watches.

Rolex Polar

The “Polar” can refer to any white dial version Rolex Explorer II model, which includes the ref. 16550, ref. 16570, and ref. 216570

Rolex President

The Rolex “Rail” dials refer to dial variations of some GMT-Master and Explorer II watches where the letters “Cs” in “Chronometer” and “Certified” in the ‘Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’ text are perfectly lined up.

The Daytona “Rainbow” chronographs are solid gold versions equipped with multi-colored sapphire set bezels.

Rolex Red Submariner

The “Red Submariner” is the nickname given to the ref. 1680, which was the first Submariner model with a date window. It picked up that nickname because the “SUBMARINER” label on the dial was printed in red.

Rolex Root Beer

Another bezel nickname of the GMT-Master, the “Root Beer” refers to either the brown and yellow bezels of vintage models or the brown and black bezels of modern GMT-Master II models.

The Rolex Submariner 126610LV is nicknamed the “Starbucks” for its black dial and green bezel, resembling the coffee brand’s color scheme. While it has a similar colorway to the Kermit, the Starbucks includes a larger 41mm case and a ceramic bezel rather than aluminum.

Rolex Stelline

Nicknamed after the Italian word for “little star,” “Stelline” watches are versions of the vintage Rolex ref. 6062 triple calendar moonphase with little star hour markers.

Rolex Steve McQueen

The “Steve McQueen” is the nickname given to the Explorer ref. 1655 because it was once erroneously reported that the actor wore one. Although that turned out to be wrong, the watch kept the nickname but it’s also commonly called the “Freccione,” which is Italian for “arrow” in reference to the arrow-tipped orange hand on the dial.

Rolex Texan

The Rolex “Texan” (or “Texano”) is a nickname for the Ref. 5100, released in 1970 as Rolex’s first quartz watch. The nickname comes from its solid 18k gold case and bracelet, which gave it a bold, oversized presence, fitting the stereotypical big and bold Texas style.

Rolex Thunderbird

In the 1950s, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbird squadron adopted the Datejust Turn-O-Graph with rotating bezels as its official watch. Therefore, Datejust Turn-O-Graph watches are now commonly called the “Thunderbird.”

The Chrono-Quartz 196.0052, known as the “Albatross” or “Montreal,” was the official timepiece for the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Powering the watch was Caliber 1611, which included a battery clamping system resembling an albatross’s wings — hence the nickname.

Omega Big Blue

The Seamaster Automatic 120M Chronograph ref. 176.004 made its debut in 1972 specifically for professional divers. The watch sported a massive case and vibrant blue dial, which paved the way for the “Big Blue” nickname. Somewhat confusingly, there’s also the modern Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M GMT 215.92.46.22.03.001 with a blue ceramic case, which Omega has officially called the “Big Blue.”

Omega Bullhead

Released in 1969, the Seamaster ref. 146.011 picked up the “Bullhead” nickname due to its distinctive silhouette and placement of the winding crown and chronograph pushers at 12 o’clock. Omega released a modern version of the watch in 2013 and today the brand includes a collection of Seamaster “Bullhead” models in its catalog.

Omega Connie

“Connie” is short for Constellation, which is one of Omega’s flagship watch collections. When collectors and enthusiasts speak of Omega Connie, they are typically referring to vintage versions.

Omega Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker, and Jedi

The late Chuck Maddox—a famous Omega enthusiast and collector, coined these Star Wars-inspired nicknames. The black version of the Omega Seamaster Chronograph ref. ST 145.0023 is known as the “Darth Vader” while the lighter version is known as the “Anakin Skywalker.” So it’s only natural that the following model, the Omega Seamaster Chronograph 145.0024, was christened the “Jedi.”

Omega Ed White

Astronaut Ed White became the first American to walk in space in 1965 and during his mission, he was wearing an Omega Speedmaster ref. 105.003. As such, that watch is now nicknamed the “Ed White.” In 2020, Omega released Speedmaster Moonwatch Caliber 321 “Ed White” in honor of that first watch.

Omega FOIS

When astronaut Wally Schirra embarked on the “Sigma 7” mission of the Mercury Program in 1962, he was wearing an Omega Speedmaster ref. CK 2998 on his wrist. As a result, this watch became known as the “First Omega in Space” (“FOIS” for short) or the “Wally Schirra.” Along with the original model, Omega has also released commemorative Speedmaster “FOIS” watches.

Omega Great White

Released in the early 2000s and long since discontinued, the Omega Seamaster GMT 2538.20.00 is nicknamed the “Great White” for its white dial and contrasting black and red accents.

Omega Holy Grail

Another nickname coined by Chuck Maddox, the Omega “Holy Grail” is the Speedmaster 376.0822 because the collector was on a mission to find one for his collection.

Omega James Bond

In the mid-1990s, Omega took over as the official watch of James Bond. Since then, Omega has manufactured a slew of Seamaster “James Bond” watches that are either featured in the films or released in conjunction with the movies. Some examples include the Seamaster Diver “GoldenEye” ref. 2541.80, the Seamaster Planet Ocean “Casino Royale” ref. 2900.50.91, the Seamaster Planet Ocean “Quantum of Solace” ref 2201.50.00, the Seamaster Planet Ocean “Skyfall” ref. 232.30.42.21.01.004 and the limited edition Seamaster 300 “SPECTRE” ref. 233.32.41.21.01.001.

Omega Jumbo

In the 1940s and 1950s, Omega introduced a series of dress watches (such as the ref. 2025, ref. 2272, ref. 2713, ref. 2325, and others) with 38mm cases. Since this was considered extra-large for the era, these are now collectively nicknamed Omega “Jumbo” watches.

Omega Mitsukoshi

The Omega “Mitsukoshi” refers to a limited-edition Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch (ref. 3570.31.00) created for the Mitsukoshi department store in Japan in the early 2000s.

Omega Moonwatch

When Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins successfully landed the first man on the Moon in 1969, the three astronauts were equipped with NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster Professional watches. Consequently, the Omega Speedmaster quickly became known as the “Moonwatch.” However, it’s important to note that while Omega has given the Moonwatch label to many of its Speedmasters when collectors say “Moonwatch” they are usually referring to stainless steel 42mm Speedmaster Professional watches—similar to the ones worn by the three astronauts.

Omega Sapphire Sandwich

Versions of the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch with sapphire crystal on the dial side and caseback are often dubbed the “Sapphire Sandwich.” Conversely, the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch models with a Hesalite crystal on the front and sapphire crystal on the back are known as “Hesalite Sandwich.”

Omega Snoopy

The Speedmaster “Snoopy” watches celebrate Omega’s NASA Silver Snoopy Award, given in 1970 for the brand’s role in the Apollo 13 mission. Several Speedmaster Snoopy editions have been released, complete with the beloved cartoon beagle on the dial and caseback. The most recent Omega Snoppy is the Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary released in 2020.

Omega Speedy

“Speedy” is the name affectionately given to the Omega Speedmaster chronograph watches. This has spawned the social media hashtag, #speedytuesday, where Omega owners post pictures of their Speedmasters on Tuesdays.

Omega Tintin

In 2013, Omega launched the Speedmaster Moonwatch Racing ref. 311.30.42.30.01.004 with a red and white checkered detail around the periphery. The inspiration for the design came from the red and white rocket featured in the 1950’s Tintin comic, “Destination Moon” so this model is now simply known as the Speedmaster “Tintin.”

Omega Ultraman

A 1970’s Japanese television character called Ultraman wore a 1968 Omega Speedmaster ref. ST 145.012 on the show. This version had an atypical orange chronograph hand, which led to the “Ultraman” nickname. In 2018, Omega introduced a limited edition Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman,” complete with an orange hand.

Seiko Arnie

The Seiko H558-5009, which was released in 1982 as the first hybrid analog-digital dive watch, was nicknamed the “Arnie” after being worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1980s action films like Predator and Commando. In 2019, Seiko introduced updated versions of the Arnie in the form of the SNJ025, SNJ027, and SNJ028.

Seiko Bottle Cap

The Seiko 5 Sports watches are nicknamed “Bottle Cap” because of their distinct round and notched rotating bezels that resemble bottle caps.

The first 20 minutes on the dive bezel of the Seiko “Mohawk” is raised, much like the strip of raised hair that defines the hairstyle its nicknamed after.

They are often categorized by their colorways, such as the “Black Monster,” the “Orange Monster,” the “Snow Monster,” the “Red Monster,” the “Yellow Monster” and so on.

Seiko Pogue

Colonel William Pogue wore the yellow dial/yellow indicator variation of the Seiko 6139-6002, now known as the “Pogue,” during the 1973 Skylab 4 mission. Although the Omega Speedmaster was the official watch of the mission, Colonel Pogue was more familiar with his Seiko as he had used it during pre-flight training

Seiko Ripley

The 1986 movie Aliens starred Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley, who wore a Seiko x Giugiaro collaboration watch (ref. SCED035). Naturally, the watch was dubbed the “Ripley” and Seiko launched a reissue (ref. SCED037) in 2015.

Seiko Samurai

Launched in 2004 and part of the Prospex range, the Seiko “Samurai” dive watches feature angular cases, broad oversized hands, 200-meter water resistance, and automatic movements. The origins of the “Samurai” name are not clear with some pointing to the sword-like hands while others drawing a line between the angles of the samurai style helmet to the case.

Seiko Sea Urchin

Considered a budget diver among the brand’s already well-priced lineup, the Seiko 5 Sports “Sea Urchin” combines time, date, and day functionality in a 100-meter water-resistant automatic watch.

Seiko Shogun

Nicknamed after the Japanese title for a military director during the feudal era, the Seiko “Shogun” dive watch offers upgraded features such as hardened titanium and the 6R15 automatic movement with hacking and hand-winding capabilities.

Seiko Starfish

The signature design trait of the aptly nicknamed Seiko “Starfish” diving watch is its six-point bezel—similar to the silhouette of a six-armed sea star.

Seiko Tuna Can

One look at the case shape and size of the Seiko “Tuna Can” and you’ll immediately understand where it got its nickname. The massive no-lug 48mm case is further protected by an outer shroud and its winding crown is positioned at 4 o’clock.

Seiko Turtle

The “Turtle” nickname is perfect for these cushion-shaped shell-like Seiko dive watches, which have been a part of the Seiko catalog since 1977. In 2020, Seiko launched a new batch of models, which are now dubbed the “King Turtle,” with several improvements including sapphire crystals and ceramic bezels.

Seiko Willard

Martin Sheen’s character, Captain Willard, wore the Seiko reference 6105 in the iconic movie, Apocalypse Now. As such, this watch is now known among enthusiasts as the Seiko “Willard.” Taking inspiration from the original model, Seiko released the premium-priced Seiko Prospex 1970 Diver’s Re-Creation Limited Edition SLA033 in 2019, and in 2020, two affordable-priced reincarnations join the lineup in the form of the ref. Audemars Piguet Brick

The Audemars Piguet “Brick” refers to the Royal Oak Offshore in solid gold, known for its hefty weight and bold presence. Typically used to describe models like the 26470OR or 25721BA, the nickname highlights the watch’s substantial gold case and integrated bracelet, which gives it a chunky, brick-like feel on the wrist.

Audemars Piguet Bumblebee

The 2009 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore 26176FO is known as the “Bumblebee” thanks to its black forged carbon case, yellow accents, and ceramic bezel.

Audemars Piguet Jumbo

The Audemars Piguet “Jumbo” refers to the Royal Oak Extra-Thin, originally introduced in 1972 as the Royal Oak 5402ST, designed by Gérald Genta. The nickname comes from its large-for-the-time 39mm case, which was unconventional for a luxury watch in the early ‘70s. Breitling Lucy

In 1953, Breitling introduced the Co-Pilot AVI 765—a military-style pilot’s watch. The vintage Heuer Autavia ref. 1163 chronograph with a black dial and orange accents goes by the nickname “Orange Boy.” In 2019, the TAG Heuer Autavia Calibre Heuer 02 For HODINKEE made its debut as an homage to the original “Orange Boy” watch.

Panerai Bronzo

The Panerai “Bronzo” refers to the brand’s watches with bronze cases, first introduced in 2011 with the PAM 382.

Panerai Destro

The Panerai “Destro” refers to the brand’s left-handed watches, featuring the crown and crown guard on the left side of the case. “Destro” means “right” in Italian, as these watches are designed to be worn on the right wrist.

Tudor Snowflake

In 1969, Tudor released two new Submariner references in the form of the ref. 7016 and the ref. 7021. These are referred to by collectors as “Snowflake” hands and other versions of the “Snowflake” Submariner joined the Tudor collection over the next decades. The Tudor “Tiger” is the nickname for the Tudor Prince Date Chronograph series from the 1990s and early 2000s. These watches included the name “Tiger” on the dial in reference to golfer Tiger Woods, who was a Tudor ambassador at the time.

The Holstein-based independent brand Oris has a plethora of bronze offerings in its catalog today. This Divers Sixty-Five Cotton Candy in sky blue (ref. 01 733 7771 3155-07 8 19 15) was one of three colorways released in the spring of 2021 with just one goal in mind — to bring a smile to your face. The 38mm bronze cases feature a bronze, unidirectional bezel around the double-domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the underside.

While you may choose the matching bronze metal bracelet, there are also leather and textile strap options. The time and date are kept in motion by the automatic Oris 733, base (Sellita SW200-1) movement. The size and profile of this watch make it just as much of a joy to wear as to look at. Thankfully for southpaws, not all watches are designed like this as some watchmakers do make left-handed models. Left-handed watches, also known as destro watches, have the crown on the left-hand side of the case rather than on the right. Whether you’re left-handed and are looking for a watch that’s easier to handle or wear your watch on the left wrist and want to avoid the crown digging into your hand, here are five left-handed watches to try.

Rolex GMT-Master II Left-Handed

Rolex flipped the script this year with the 2022 release of the GMT-Master II ref. 126720VTNR. Not only does this new GMT-Master II feature a never-before-seen green and black Cerachrom ceramic bezel, but it’s also a left-handed model — a first for Rolex. Along with the left-side placement of the crown, Rolex also shifted the date window to sit at the 9 o’clock position (instead of 3 o’clock), complete with the Cyclops magnification lens above it.

Though the lefty GMT-Master II runs on the same Caliber 3285 automatic movement as its right-handed counterparts, Rolex did have to make adjustments to accommodate the new configuration. The 40mm steel case of the GMT-Master II ref. 126720VTNR houses a black dial with the customary Mercedes-style hands and the 24-hour hand is rendered in green to match the bezel. Rolex is offering the new Left-Handed GMT-Master II with a choice of the sporty three-link Oyster bracelet or dressier five-link Jubilee bracelet.

Tudor Pelagos LHD

It’s not uncommon for Tudor to release watches that are similar in style to its big brother Rolex. However, when it comes to left-handed watches, Tudor did it first among the two. The Tudor Pelagos LHD (short for Left-Hand Drive) ref. 25610TNL debuted in 2016. The watch sports a 42mm titanium case, which is water-resistant to 500 meters deep. And its signature detail, of course, is the left-hand placement of the winding crown. Since the crown is on the left, Tudor moved the helium escape valve of the Pelagos LHD to the other side, at 3 o’clock.

The dial layout remains the same as the standard Pelagos watches, which is to say there’s a date window at 3 o’clock (but the roulette-style dial does have red even numbers and black odd numbers) along with the trio of Snowflake hands at the center. The Tudor Pelagos LHD — powered by the in-house Caliber MT5612-LHD automatic movement — is paired with a matching titanium bracelet but the set also includes a black rubber strap if purchased from an authorized dealer.

Panerai Luminor Left-Handed 8 Days

The word “destro” is Italian for (funny enough) “right” in reference to the preferred wrist to wear a left-handed watch. And Panerai (a brand that was born in Florence, Italy) has been making regular production destro watches for a long time. One current example is the Luminor Left-Handed PAM00796 featuring a 44mm steel case, a hand-wound mechanical movement with an eight-day power reserve, and a handsome black leather strap.

Like all Destro Panerai watches, the Luminor PAM 796 not only has the crown (and accompanying lever-operated bridge crown protector) on the left but also flips the dial to have the running seconds on the right. The dial is of the famed Panerai “sandwich” variety, which means that the lume is sandwiched between the black dial and a plate and is visible via the cutout indices.

Sinn EZM 3F

With a bead-blasted steel 41mm case, magnetic field protection up to 100mT, air-dehumidifying technology to prevent dial fogging, and water resistance to 200 meters deep, the Sinn EZM 3F pilot watch is one tough timepiece. The EZM stands for Einsatzzeitmesser, which is German for “mission timer” while the F is for “flieger” or pilot. And like all pilot watches, the name of the game is optimal legibility, which the Sinn EZM 3F’s uncluttered black dial certainly delivers. The countdown bezel is marked for every minute and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protects the dial.

One of the most interesting components of the automatic Sinn EZM 3F is the placement of the crown on the left, which according to the brand is “to prevent pressure on the back of the hand.” Therefore, the Sinn EZM 3F is not explicitly designed for lefties who wear their watches on the right wrist but for right-handers who strap their timepieces around their left arm. However, anyone can enjoy this German pilot watch, regardless of which wrist it’s worn on!

Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Professional Diver BJ8050

Aptly nicknamed the Ecozilla, the Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Professional Diver BJ8050 is a beast of a watch. The steel case of this 300m water-resistant dive watch measures an enormous 48mm, and it’s 18mm thick. There are no lugs and the watch comes equipped with a black rubber strap.

The unidirectional bezel of the BJ8050 is a prominent component, featuring oversized numerals and deeply carved out finger grips. The winding left-hand drive screw-down crown at 9 o’clock is protected by crown guards while the date window sits at the typical 3 o’clock side. As expected there’s plenty of luminous material on the dial, from the sizable sword hands to the large hour markers. Like all Citizen Eco-Drive watches, this one is powered by any type of light source and will never need a battery to run.

While destro watches aren’t that common, we do appreciate that some watch brands include left-handed watches in their catalogs. As mentioned, these can be used either by people who are left-handed or by those who want to avoid the dreaded crown digging.

If you’re interested in learning about various timepiece shapes, then this guide to different watch cases is just what you need to read. Let’s get into it!

Round and Oval Watches

Round watches are the most ubiquitous silhouette of all, and all watchmakers offer them. One of the reasons for this shape is that most watch movements are round too—therefore, a round case is what will house them the best. In short, round pocket watches transitioned into round wristwatches.

Timepieces with round cases can come in sporty styles like the Rolex Submariner, Omega Speedmaster, Tudor Black Bay, and Seiko Prospex. But they can also be dressier such as the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master, IWC Portofino, and Breitling Premier.

In addition to perfectly round cases, some watchmakers offer oval cases too, which can be aligned east-west or north-south. Some famous oval watches include the Cartier Baignoire (named after the French word for bathtub), Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse, and the Chopard Happy Sport. These days, oval watches are typically marketed as women’s watches.

Tonneau and Cushion Watches

Tonneau is the French word for barrel and Cartier is credited for introducing the Tonneau watch in 1906. Today, barrel-shaped watches are quite a popular style among ultra-high-end watch brands. For instance, most Richard Mille watches sport tonneau cases as do many Franck Muller and Parmigiani Fleurier timepieces. Hublot even has a tonneau-shaped collection called the Spirit of the Big Bang.

While tonneau shaped cases are generally longer and more rectangular in shape, cushion watches are wider and squarer. Cushion-shaped watches offer a vintage style that many watch enthusiasts appreciate.

Panerai is perhaps the most famous modern luxury watchmaker that makes cushion-shaped watches as seen by the popular Radiomir and Luminor models. The Cartier Drive collection offers elegant and slim cushion watches for men and Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin have also included cushion timepieces in their catalogs.

Square and Rectangular Watches

Four-cornered wristwatch cases have been around since the turn of the 20th century. Cartier introduced the square watch in 1904 with the Santos and the rectangular watch in 1917 with the Tank—both of which remain staples of the current Cartier watch lineup.

Aside from Cartier, other watch brands also make popular square watches. For instance, there’s the TAG Heuer Monaco, which was made famous by Steve McQueen in the 1971 movie, Le Mans. Plus, most Bell & Ross watches also have square cases and Nomos makes the square Tetra model. You can also find vintage square dress watches from the likes of Patek, Vacheron, and Audemars Piguet.

Rectangular watch cases are generally associated with the Art Deco movement and along with the Cartier Tank, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is one of the most famous rectangular watches ever made. As its name suggests, the Reverso features a reversible case; this clever swivel case system was invented in the 1930s as a way for polo players to protect the fragile dial during polo matches. Longines also makes rectangular watches in the form of the Dolce Vita collection.

However, the best-selling rectangular watch today is by far, the Apple Watch. Apple designer, Jony Ives, was asked several times why the Apple watch is rectangular rather than round and he has said: “When a huge part of the function is lists, a circle doesn’t make any sense.” We couldn’t agree more.

Octagonal Watches

Eight-sided watch cases have become absolutely iconic thanks to one company–Audemars Piguet. In 1972, Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak watch, featuring an avant-garde eight-sided bezel punctuated with exposed screws. The launch of the octagonal Royal Oak paved the way for the then-new ultra-luxurious steel sports watch category and it wasn’t long before other brands followed.

For instance, Patek Philippe unveiled the Nautilus watch in 1976, which also sported an octagonal bezel but softer in execution due to its rounded corners. It’s interesting to note that Gerald Genta was the man that designed both these now-famous octagonal watches. The Girard-Perregaux Laureato is another sporty watch with eight-sided details that traces its roots back to the 1970s. The current versions of the Laureato are fitted with even more prominent octagon-shaped bezels than the vintage versions.

The Bulgari Octo is a modern take on the octagonal watch, which marries an eight-sided case and dial with a round bezel. The Octo Finissimo watches are the ultra-thin versions, and several of them have broken records for the slimmest watch cases ever made.

Asymmetrical Watches

Finally, there are also several unconventional shapes worth discussing, commonly known as asymmetrical watches. Often quirky and whimsical, the asymmetrical watch category is home to numerous shapes that stand out from classic forms.

For example, the Cartier Crash watch is a highly collectible and rare piece that dons an amorphous case that resembles a once-oval watch that survived a fiery car accident. In fact, Cartier is the master of asymmetrical watches as illustrated by such creations as the Cartier Cloche (French for bell), Cartier La Dona, and Cartier Tank Asymetrique.

There’s also the eccentric triangular Hamilton Ventura watch that became famous after Elvis Presley wore one. We can’t forget the hefty Gerald Genta-designed Rolex King Midas watch (yet another asymmetrical watch that Elvis wore). Carved from a single block of gold, the King Midas watch was the heaviest gold watch on the market upon its release in the 1960s. When positioned on its side, the five-sided case design of the Rolex Midas watch is meant to resemble the Parthenon temple of Athena in Greece, complete with the integrated bracelet pieces mimicking the columns.

Seiko Automatic Diver SKX007

The Seiko Automatic Diver SKX007 (and the Seiko “Pepsi” SKX009 variation) is perhaps the most beloved value-priced automatic diving watch ever made. In fact, many still lament the fact that it was discontinued a few years back and are waiting for a true successor of this legendary diver.

The Seiko SKX007’s 42mm case fits a 22mm strap, making it a great candidate for strap changes—and there are plenty of SKX007 owners that love to experiment with different bands and bracelets. The watch’s classic steel case and black dial and bezel combination can seamlessly go with a vast assortment of materials, colors, and styles, which is the very definition of a strap monster. Whether steel bracelets, bright rubber straps, or colorful NATO-style bands, just about everything looks good with this versatile dive watch.

If you’re into watches, the Omega Speedmaster Professional a.k.a. the Omega Speedmaster “Moonwatch” (or “Speedy”) needs no introduction. This famous manual-winding chronograph became the first watch worn on the Moon in 1969 and its legion of fans has continued to grow throughout the decades.

What makes the 42mm Speedy Moonwatch a true strap monster is, yet again, its classic design featuring a steel case and black dial and bezel coupled with a lug width of 20mm. Since 20mm is the most common size of aftermarket straps, the choices of what strap to pair with the Speedmaster Professional are plentiful. A band with contrast stitching dresses up the Speedmaster beautifully while distressed leather can emphasize the watch’s vintage charm. And of course, we can’t forget NATO-style fabric straps, which offer a similar style to how astronauts wore their Speedmasters in space.

Panerai Luminor

With its large cushion-shaped case, stark dial with oversized Arabic numerals, and exaggerated crown protector, the Panerai Luminor remains one of the most recognizable luxury watches in the market. If you’re familiar with the Luminor, you can spot that watch from a mile away.

Talk to any Paneristi and they’ll likely mention that one of the joys of owning a Luminor is that the watch looks incredible on a variety of leather straps. When Panerai made diving watches for the Italian Royal Navy in the 1930s and 1940s, the watches were all fitted with long water-resistant leather straps so that the military divers could securely wrap them around their diving suits. So leather would be the most historically authentic strap style to wear with the Luminor—however, that doesn’t mean the watch doesn’t look amazing with a rubber strap either!

Most Luminor watches have 44mm cases with 24mm lug widths. While 24mm straps are on the wider side, the appeal of the generously sized Luminor is that it can flawlessly accommodate chunky straps. There are some Luminor watches with 40mm cases (22mm lug) and others with larger 47mm cases (26mm lugs), so double-check the size of your Panerai Luminor before you hunt down the perfect strap for it.

NOMOS Glashütte Tangomat

German watchmaker NOMOS Glashütte has been making superb mechanical watches with in-house movements for three decades now. The company’s famed Bauhaus aesthetic has garnered a loyal following and while NOMOS offers plenty of watch collections, they all share that unmistakable minimalist design.

The NOMOS Tangomat watch is a quintessential timepiece, featuring a slim case and uncluttered white dial punctuated with cornflower blue hands. However, unlike the smaller and manual-wound NOMOS Tangente (which was NOMOS’s first hit timepiece model) the Tangomat is both automatic and slightly larger with a 38mm case (20mm lugs). The Tangomat’s clean lines and understated style make it a perfect candidate for a dressier strap monster to have in your collection.

Swatch x Omega MoonSwatch

The biggest watch launch last year was without a doubt, the MoonSwatch – Swatch’s take on the iconic Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch. This colorful collection of chronographs inspired by our solar system is a perfect assortment of strap monsters; you can match the straps to the various colors of the watches (such as yellow, turquoise, red, green, blue, and others) or go with more neutral tones to let the cases and dials really shine through.

Out of the box, a MoonSwatch is furnished with a Velcro strap printed with both the Omega and Swatch logos and a very large “SPEEDMASTER” inscription. Honestly, these aren’t the best-looking straps – but thankfully, they’re easy enough to swap out. The lug width of the MoonSwatch is 20mm, and we think the watches pair particularly well with rubber straps.

Rolex Submariner

An integral part of the design of the Rolex Submariner is its three-link Oyster bracelet. So much so that when you switch it out for a different strap, the watch takes on an entirely new look. Dress it up with a leather strap, go casual with a NATO strap, or wear it with a rubber strap to emphasize the dive watch vibes. James Bond wore his Submariner with a NATO strap back in the 1960s and Gordon Ramsay wears his vintage Submariner on a leather strap – both excellent looks.

It’s important to remember that Rolex updated the Submariner in 2020 with larger 41mm cases (compared to the previous 40mm). Plus, early vintage Rolex Submariners without crown guards measure around 37.5mm. Therefore, the width of the Submariner strap you buy will depend on which reference you own. It will be 21mm for the latest Submariner 41 and 20mm for older models.

Tudor Black Bay 58

Thanks to its compact case size and vintage-inspired design, the Tudor Black Bay 58 diving watch has been a hit since it was released in 2018. The Black Bay 58 is available in various metals including steel, bronze, gold, and silver, in addition to some bezel and dial color variations. In true Tudor fashion, the watch is sold with a variety of strap options including metal bracelets, leather bands, and fabric straps.

However, given the user-friendly 20mm lug width of the 39mm case, the Tudor Black Bay 58 can also be fitted with a wide range of after-market straps including rubber ones, which, in our opinion, is always a good idea for diving watches.

While we may not agree with the separation of men’s watches and women’s watches, almost all watch brands still organize their collections that way. So we dug around the “ladies’ watch” section and came up with some treasures. Here are some fantastic sporty mechanical watches for women to check out.

Rolex Yacht-Master 37

Rolex has always made the nautical-inspired Yacht-Master watch in various size options. Today’s version of the midsize Yacht-Master comes with a 37mm case, which is topped, as always, with a bidirectional rotating 60-minute timing bezel.

Like most other sizes, the sporty 37mm Yacht-Master is available in a wide assortment of materials. A particularly popular variation is the steel Yacht-Master 37 with a sandblasted platinum bezel that glistens in the sun. For fans of two-tone colorways, the Yacht-Master 37 is also available in a striking combination of cool steel and warm Everose gold—Rolex’s proprietary rose gold alloy. Finally, the most luxurious option is the Everose gold Yacht-Master 37, fitted with a sleek matte black ceramic bezel and robust black rubber Oysterflex bracelet. This solid gold version also comes with the choice of a matching black dial or a diamond-paved one.

Powering the time and date functionality of the Yacht-Master 37 is an in-house made automatic Rolex movement, with about 55 hours of power reserve.

Omega Speedmaster 38

The Omega Speedmaster is one of the world’s most famous chronographs thanks in part to its link to space exploration. However, the Speedmaster collection offers plenty of alternatives that sit alongside the famed Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch—including a stunning collection of Speedmaster watches with 38mm cases.

While the Speedmaster 38 watches look similar to their larger counterparts, there are a few design variations to note. The most notable of them is that almost all Speedmaster 38 watches have oval-shaped subdials rather than the more traditional round ones. Moreover, the tachymeter bezels are slightly thinner—and some are accompanied by diamonds, and some aren’t.

In true Omega fashion, there are plenty of Speedmaster 38 options to choose from, whether in steel, Sedna gold (Omega’s proprietary red gold alloy), or yellow gold. Plus, there are also dial colors and bracelet or strap types to consider. Inside the Speedmaster 38 is a chronometer-certified Co-Axial automatic movement.

Patek Philippe Nautilus

Is there an ultra-luxe sports watch as famous as the Patek Philippe Nautilus right now? Probably not, especially since the brand recently announced it was discontinuing the immensely popular (and essentially-impossible-to-get) steel Nautilus 5711. While some battle to get their hands on the 40mm Nautilus watches, there’s a whole other section of the collection branded the “Nautilus Ladies Automatic” the rest of us can enjoy.

The Patek Nautilus ref. 7118 models sport 35.8mm cases, designed in the same porthole-inspired style of the larger versions, complete with the rounded octagonal bezel. Bezels come either plain or set with 56 diamonds. The dials feature a wavy horizontal pattern, punctuated by a date window at 6 o’clock and an Arabic numeral at 12 o’clock. There are steel and rose gold versions of the ref. 7118, all fitted with the customary Nautilus integrated bracelet.

The back of the Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 7118 watches are furnished with sapphire crystal casebacks for a view of the beautifully decorated automatic movement (up to 45-hour power reserve) inside the case.

Panerai Luminor Due 38

If there’s one brand that has cornered the oversized watch market, it’s Panerai with case sizes typically ranging from 44mm to 47mm. So it came as a surprise to many when Panerai announced the Luminor Due in 2016, with some models equipped with restrained 38mm cases that are only 11.2mm thick.

The Luminor Due 38 may have a smaller-than-expected diameter for Panerai watches, yet it offers plenty of wrist presence thanks to the unmistakable Luminor silhouette. Similar to all Luminor watches, the 38mm variations feature the signature oversized crown-protecting bridge on the right side of the case. Furthermore, the dials are all fashioned in typical Panerai style with oversized hands and hour markers, in addition to a date window at 3 o’clock and a running seconds at 9 o’clock. Panerai Luminor Due 38 watches, which are all automatic, are offered in steel or rose gold and come with a varied assortment of leather straps.

IWC Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36

The IWC Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36 is all about clean lines and legibility. And the best part of it is the wearable 36mm case—a return to the original size of the 1948 Mark 11 watches destined for WWII pilots.

Whether paired with a matching steel bracelet or a colored leather strap, the Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36 is effortlessly cool and casual. The dial design is customary aviation style, complete with the triangle plus two dots at 12 o’clock accompanied by prominent Arabic numerals. There’s also a discreet date window at 3 o’clock. The watch also benefits from a soft-iron inner case for additional resistance against magnetic fields while the sapphire crystal protecting the dial is resilient to scratching.

IWC makes the IWC Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36 in stainless steel and offers the choice of a black, gray, or blue dial. As its name implies, it runs on an automatic movement, which supplies the watch with 42 hours of power reserve.
