Round and Oval Watches

Round watches are the most ubiquitous silhouette of all, and all watchmakers offer them. One of the reasons for this shape is that most watch movements are round too—therefore, a round case is what will house them the best. In short, round pocket watches transitioned into round wristwatches.

Timepieces with round cases can come in sporty styles like the Rolex Submariner, Omega Speedmaster, Tudor Black Bay, and Seiko Prospex. But they can also be dressier such as the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master, IWC Portofino, and Breitling Premier.

In addition to perfectly round cases, some watchmakers offer oval cases too, which can be aligned east-west or north-south. Some famous oval watches include the Cartier Baignoire (named after the French word for bathtub), Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse, and the Chopard Happy Sport. These days, oval watches are typically marketed as women’s watches.

Tonneau and Cushion Watches

Tonneau is the French word for barrel and Cartier is credited for introducing the Tonneau watch in 1906. Today, barrel-shaped watches are quite a popular style among ultra-high-end watch brands. For instance, most Richard Mille watches sport tonneau cases as do many Franck Muller and Parmigiani Fleurier timepieces. Hublot even has a tonneau-shaped collection called the Spirit of the Big Bang.

While tonneau shaped cases are generally longer and more rectangular in shape, cushion watches are wider and squarer. Cushion-shaped watches offer a vintage style that many watch enthusiasts appreciate.

Panerai is perhaps the most famous modern luxury watchmaker that makes cushion-shaped watches as seen by the popular Radiomir and Luminor models. The Cartier Drive collection offers elegant and slim cushion watches for men and Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin have also included cushion timepieces in their catalogs.

Square and Rectangular Watches

Four-cornered wristwatch cases have been around since the turn of the 20th century. Cartier introduced the square watch in 1904 with the Santos and the rectangular watch in 1917 with the Tank—both of which remain staples of the current Cartier watch lineup.

Aside from Cartier, other watch brands also make popular square watches. For instance, there’s the TAG Heuer Monaco, which was made famous by Steve McQueen in the 1971 movie, Le Mans. Plus, most Bell & Ross watches also have square cases and Nomos makes the square Tetra model. You can also find vintage square dress watches from the likes of Patek, Vacheron, and Audemars Piguet.

Rectangular watch cases are generally associated with the Art Deco movement and along with the Cartier Tank, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is one of the most famous rectangular watches ever made. As its name suggests, the Reverso features a reversible case; this clever swivel case system was invented in the 1930s as a way for polo players to protect the fragile dial during polo matches. Longines also makes rectangular watches in the form of the Dolce Vita collection.

However, the best-selling rectangular watch today is by far, the Apple Watch. Apple designer, Jony Ives, was asked several times why the Apple watch is rectangular rather than round and he has said: “When a huge part of the function is lists, a circle doesn’t make any sense.” We couldn’t agree more.

Octagonal Watches

Eight-sided watch cases have become absolutely iconic thanks to one company–Audemars Piguet. In 1972, Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak watch, featuring an avant-garde eight-sided bezel punctuated with exposed screws. The launch of the octagonal Royal Oak paved the way for the then-new ultra-luxurious steel sports watch category and it wasn’t long before other brands followed.

For instance, Patek Philippe unveiled the Nautilus watch in 1976, which also sported an octagonal bezel but softer in execution due to its rounded corners. It’s interesting to note that Gerald Genta was the man that designed both these now-famous octagonal watches. The Girard-Perregaux Laureato is another sporty watch with eight-sided details that traces its roots back to the 1970s. The current versions of the Laureato are fitted with even more prominent octagon-shaped bezels than the vintage versions.

The Bulgari Octo is a modern take on the octagonal watch, which marries an eight-sided case and dial with a round bezel. The Octo Finissimo watches are the ultra-thin versions, and several of them have broken records for the slimmest watch cases ever made.

Asymmetrical Watches

Finally, there are also several unconventional shapes worth discussing, commonly known as asymmetrical watches. Often quirky and whimsical, the asymmetrical watch category is home to numerous shapes that stand out from classic forms.

For example, the Cartier Crash watch is a highly collectible and rare piece that dons an amorphous case that resembles a once-oval watch that survived a fiery car accident. In fact, Cartier is the master of asymmetrical watches as illustrated by such creations as the Cartier Cloche (French for bell), Cartier La Dona, and Cartier Tank Asymetrique.

There’s also the eccentric triangular Hamilton Ventura watch that became famous after Elvis Presley wore one. We can’t forget the hefty Gerald Genta-designed Rolex King Midas watch (yet another asymmetrical watch that Elvis wore). Carved from a single block of gold, the King Midas watch was the heaviest gold watch on the market upon its release in the 1960s. When positioned on its side, the five-sided case design of the Rolex Midas watch is meant to resemble the Parthenon temple of Athena in Greece, complete with the integrated bracelet pieces mimicking the columns.

Generally speaking, Rolex is a conservative watch brand, preferring to stick to the classics and tried-and-true designs. So when the Swiss watchmaking giant lets loose (even just a little bit), people tend to take notice. This was the case with the release of the new-generation Oyster Perpetual collection. While this is the brand’s most basic watch collection, these entry-level Rolex watches are now available with plenty of colorful dials.

One of those vibrant dials that would be perfect to wear during the holiday season is the Coral Red variant, which is available on the 31mm, 36mm, and 41mm versions of these latest Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches. Make no mistake, this is a vivid shade of red (with a touch of orange to it), so it’s not for the faint of heart. But if you’re into bright red watches, you’ll likely love Rolex’s version.

Omega De Ville Trésor

Riz Ahmed Wears Omega and Bell & Ross

Riz Ahmed nabbed a nomination for “Best Actor in a Leading Role” in the film Sound of Metal for his portrayal of a metal drummer who loses his hearing. Aside from an already impressive acting résumé that includes roles in the movies Nightcrawler and Rogue One, in addition to the HBO miniseries The Night Of, the 2021 Oscar nominee also has a successful music career as Riz MC.

To complement his stylish laid-back style, Riz Ahmed opts for a few different watches. For instance, we’ve spotted him wearing a two-tone Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra with a matching steel and gold bracelet. On another occasion, Riz Ahmed paired a black suit with a black tee and an all-black Bell & Ross watch. Steven Yeun wears Omega and Timex

Steven Yeun first struck it big on the small screen playing Glenn Rhee in the super popular AMC television series The Walking Dead. In 2020, Steven Yeun not only served as executive producer of the film Minari but also took on the lead role. Minari tells the tale of a family of South Korean immigrants trying to make it in rural United States during the 1980s and the movie has earned six Oscar nominations. One of those is Steven Yeun’s nomination for “Best Actor in a Leading Role.”

With already one Oscar award to his name, this is the third time Gary Oldman is nominated in the “Best Actor in a Leading Role” category. Gary Oldman’s Academy Award nomination this year is for his title role in the film Mank, which is about Herman J. Mankiewicz’s development of the screenplay for Citizen Kane.

Gary Oldman’s taste in luxury watches is almost as diverse as the parts he’s played in the past. We’ve spotted Gary Oldman wearing a variety of different timepieces over the years, ranging from vintage Rolex watches to a sporty TAG Heuer Monaco to an elegant Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. One theme that seems to carry through Gary Oldman’s watches is a preference for leather straps.

Daniel Kaluuya Wears Omega and Cartier

It’s been a solid award season for actor Daniel Kaluuya so far as he’s racked up best supporting actor awards at BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Critics’ Choice for his portrayal of Chairman Fred Hampton in the movie Judas and the Black Messiah. And now the actor is a favorite to win the Oscar for “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” this coming Sunday.

Daniel Kaluuya has been dressing up his wrist to match his award outfits this year, first wearing a full gold Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra complete with a matching gold bracelet to the Critics’ Choice Awards. Following that, we noticed Daniel Kaluuya sporting a two-tone steel and yellow gold Cartier Ballon Bleu to the Screen Actors Guild Awards, also on a metal bracelet. We can’t wait to see what watch he’ll choose to wear to the Oscars.

Sacha Baron Cohen Wears Omega and IWC

He may be most known for his comedic characters like Borat, but Sacha Baron Cohen can also be serious when the role calls for it. Sacha Baron Cohen has two 2021 Oscar nominations to prove it—one for best supporting actor for playing Abbie Hoffman in the drama The Trial of Chicago 7 and the other for “Best Adapted Screenplay” for the comedy Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

As this year’s Golden Globe Awards, Sacha Baron Cohen had on an Omega Speedmaster “Moonwatch” when he accepted his award for “Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Film” via Zoom. Conversely, during last year’s pre-pandemic award season, Sacha Baron Cohen was often spotted wearing an IWC Portugieser Chrono on a leather strap while posing for pics on the red carpet.

David Fincher Wears Rolex

Director David Fincher has been nominated three times for an Academy Award for the films The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), The Social Network (2010), and this year’s contender, Mank (2020). While he’s picked up plenty of other awards for his film and television work, an Oscar has eluded him thus far—but maybe this year will prove to be different.

In terms of watches, David Fincher is a fan of Rolex with several models appearing on his wrist over the years. From an ultra-luxe platinum Day-Date II on a matching platinum President bracelet to a steel Submariner on an Oyster bracelet to a white gold Daytona on a black rubber Oysterflex bracelet, David Fincher clearly appreciates white metal Rolex watches.

Frances McDormand Wears Rolex

Frances McDormand is no stranger to the Academy Awards, having already won two Oscars and nominated several times over the last three decades. This year, Frances McDormand is nominated yet again, vying for a “Best Actress” award for playing Fern in the film Nomadland.

While Frances McDormand is known for enjoying breaking so-called fashion rules—particularly on the red carpet—the Oscar-winning actress does stick to a classic when it comes to her watch. Frances McDormand often wears straightforward steel Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch, paired with the classic Oyster bracelet.

The Minimalist

The minimalist is someone who prefers understated watches with clean lines, legible dials, and more often than not, tasteful leather straps. With restrained case sizes and stark dial designs, brands like Nomos Glashütte and Junghans offer plenty of fantastic unassuming high-quality timepieces in their respective catalogs.

Alternatively, if a minimalist opts for a big brand name, they’ll go for the most discreet options within the collection such as the Rolex Oyster Perpetual or the IWC Portofino. A watch is there to subtly complement a look rather than be the star of the show because, for a minimalist, there’s nothing worse than clutter and chaos.

The Maximalist

On the other end of the style spectrum is the maximalist—someone who wholeheartedly believes in “go big or go home.” And that ethos extends to watches too; if you’re going to wear a watch, make sure it makes a bold statement. Oversized watches like Hublot Big Bang, Panerai Luminor, Bell & Ross, or anything from Richard Mille will certainly fit the bill.

What’s more, a great way to amp up a watch’s wrist presence is to combine it with a colorful strap. For maximalists that like to dress up, shiny gold watches with matching gold bracelets, like a Rolex President or precious metal Audemars Piguet Royal Oak can do the trick too. There’s a certain subset of maximalists that can perfectly rock a diamond watch too.

The Curator

The curator is attracted to the classic icons of the watch world. They’re not interested in current trends and fleeting fads. They prefer timepieces that have endured over decades to become quintessential must-haves. Adding a watch to a collection is never done on a whim, but rather it is a deliberate and thoughtful process.

Instantly recognizable watches such as the Rolex Submariner, Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, IWC Portugieser Chronograph, Patek Philippe Nautilus, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, and the like are some of the most popular among the curator crowd.

The Nostalgic

The nostalgic has a sense of style that is firmly rooted in the past—a yearning for the “good ol’ days,” so to speak. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the nostalgic will typically opt for vintage or vintage-inspired watches. Some examples include pilot watches like the Breitling Navitimer, racing watches like the TAG Heuer Monaco, military watches like the Hamilton Khaki Field, and old-school divers like the Panerai Radiomir.

Wearing vintage-inspired straps is yet another way to play up a watch’s retro vibes. Even more important than the aesthetics of the timepiece, however, is the story that comes along with it. The nostalgic will frequently own a watch passed down from a family member or is looking forward to the day they can pass on their watch to someone special.

The Traditionalist

Closely related to the nostalgic but more conservative, the traditionalist favors elegant timepieces to match a dapper demeanor.

Whether Art Deco rectangular models like the Cartier Tank and Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, or slim classic round timepieces such as the Patek Philippe Calatrava and Vacheron Constantin Patrimony, less is more for the traditionalist. The ideal case metal is yellow gold, preferably fitted with a dark leather strap, and powered by a thin manual-winding movement.

The Adventurist

Whether diving, climbing, flying, sailing, or traveling, the adventurist is always on the go, seeking the next quest. This type of lifestyle requires gear that can keep up. Thankfully, there are tons of watches out there created specifically for the adventurist that boast plenty of water resistance, durability, and functionality.

Pairing the watch with a sturdy nylon or rubber strap can boost robustness too. From the Rolex Explorer II and Breitling Super Avenger to the Omega Planet Ocean and Seiko divers, these watches are built to withstand extreme conditions common to the adventurist lifestyle.

The Motorhead

Fueled by a passion for cars, it’s only natural for the motorhead to wear auto-inspired watches. And if there’s one style that the watch world is not short of, it is car-focused ones.

From famous racing watches like the Rolex Daytona, Omega Speedmaster, and TAG Heuer Carrera, to collaborative models like the Zenith El Primero Land Rover, Hublot Ferrari, and Breitling Bentley, the motorhead has a bevy of watch options to flaunt his car-loving persona. Plus, for that extra mile, there are also motoring-inspired watch bands like perforated rally straps or racing livery-colored nylon straps.

The Data-Driven

For the data-driven, the appearance of a watch is second to its functionality. Smartwatches like the Apple Watch, Sunnto, Fitbit, and Garmin offer the data-driven a dizzying array of information at the touch of a finger. Why stop at merely timekeeping when a smartwatch can do so much more?

The athletic data-driven can track performance and vitals, while the ambitious data-driven can stay on top of daily tasks and obligations. It’s all about optimization, and having a world of capabilities strapped around your wrist is incredibly practical. Style is still important, and switching out straps to change the look of a smartwatch is great, but for the data-driven, performance is always king.

It goes without saying that some of us just don’t fit into just one of these watch types. Many of us have overlapping styles and like to switch things up depending on mood or occasion—and our watch and strap collections can also reflect that. Hamilton Watches – Interstellar

Hamilton has stuck to a very clever strategy to get their watches into movies; they go after the behind the scenes crewmembers like directors, prop managers, set designers, and costume designers because the brand understands that these are the people who decide what the cast of characters end up wearing on screen. The company has even been hosting the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards since 2006, where actors and actresses give out awards to those who work tirelessly in the background to make the movies happen.

While Hamilton watches have appeared in over 500 feature films—including ‘2001: The Space Odyssey’, ‘Men in Black’, and ‘Ocean’s Eleven’—a particularly famous appearance was in the movie ‘Interstellar’ (2014). The science fiction film by Christopher Nolan stars Matthew McConaughey as Cooper, a former NASA pilot, and Mackenzie Foy as his daughter Murphy.

Hamilton worked closely with Warner Bros. and furnished the film with not one, but two models. The first was Coopers’ stainless steel Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day Date fitted with a matching steel bracelet, which was part of the company’s current catalog. However, the second one was specifically designed for the movie and picked up the nickname the Hamilton “Murph Watch” because Cooper gave it to his daughter before heading out on a mission to save humanity. And if you’ve seen the movie, you know that Murph’s watch plays a critical role in the plot.

The custom Murph watch merged various design details from different Hamilton watches and the end result was a stunning stainless steel watch with a black dial, pilot hands, Arabic numerals, and a black leather strap. Fans of the movie were disappointed that the watch was not available for purchase while Interstellar was still showing in theaters. However, five years after the movie released, Hamilton delighted cinephiles and watch enthusiasts everywhere by finally introducing the Hamilton Khaki Field “Murph” watch for sale to the public.

Omega Watches – First Man

2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 mission to the Moon in 1969 when astronaut Neil Armstrong took “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind” on the lunar surface with fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin right behind him. For their spaceflight to the Moon, the duo wore Speedmaster chronographs, supplied by Omega to NASA. In fact, when Buzz Aldrin stepped out of the lunar module for his moonwalk, he had his trusty Speedmaster strapped around the exterior of his space suit via a custom long Velcro strap. Neil Armstrong left his Speedmaster inside the lunar module as a backup, because the lander spacecraft’s electronic timer had malfunctioned.

In 2018, Universal Pictures released the movie First Man, based on a book that recounts Neil Armstrong’s story from 1961 until 1969 in the years leading up to NASA’s Apollo 11 mission. Directed by Damien Chazelle, ‘First Man’ stars Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong and Corey Stoll as Buzz Aldrin. Naturally, for historical accuracy, it was Omega that supplied the timepieces for the movie production—four in total.

Neil Armstrong’s daily watch in the movie was a steel Omega CK 2605 time-only watch on a handsome tan leather strap. During NASA training, he then switched to a steel Omega Speedmaster ST 105.003 chronograph outfitted with a tachymeter bezel in black and a black leather strap. Finally, the third Omega watch to make an appearance in ‘First Man’ was the historic Speedmaster ST 105.012. Now known as the “Moonwatch”, this model was worn by all Apollo 11 crewmembers – Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. Omega also contributed a period-correct 1960s stopwatch to the film set for on-screen NASA training operations.

Breitling Watch – Blood Diamond

Once upon a time, around 2009, actor Leonardo DiCaprio signed on as an official brand ambassador for TAG Heuer. The superstar even wore TAG Heuer watches in a few of his movies, such as an understated stainless steel TAG Heuer Carrera watch in Inception (2010) and a flashy yellow gold TAG Heuer Professional 1000 Series timepiece in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ (2013).

However, a few years before that, Leonardo DiCaprio starred in the action-packed political film, Blood ‘Diamond’ (2006) where his character Danny Archer, a South African mercenary, wore a Breitling Avenger Chrono watch. Turns out it was a solid choice since a tough timepiece was in order for Danny Archer’s dangerous quest to find a rare pink diamond during the Sierra Leone Civil War. His particular Breitling Chrono Avenger sports a 44 mm titanium case, black dial, and brown leather strap with white stitching.

Seiko Watch – Apocalypse Now

Often described as one of the best movies of all time, the 1979 classic ‘Apocalypse Now’ takes the story from the novel ‘Heart of Darkness’ based in 19th Century Congo and adapts it to play out during the Vietnam War circa 1969 – 1970. Directed, produced and co-written by Francis Ford Coppola, ‘Apocalypse Now’ featured a star-studded cast, unforgettably haunting scenes and a great example of Seiko watches in movies.

The film depicts the harrowing journey of Captain Benjamin L. Willard (Martin Sheen) trying to fulfill his secret mission to assassinate Colonel Kurtz—who has presumably lost his mind deep in the jungle. While playing Captain Willard, Martin Sheen wears a robust Seiko 6105-8110/9 dive watch, featuring a 41 mm cushion case in steel with a crown at 4 o’clock and fitted with a characteristic black waffle rubber strap. It was a particularly apt choice for the film as Seiko 6105 watches were, in fact, available at US military base stores around the world and were popular among US troops during the Vietnam War. Thanks to its significant screen time, this Seiko later became known as the Seiko “Captain Willard” in collecting circles, which we talked about in our ‘History of Seiko Dive Watches’ article. Seiko even recently released a modern take on the model in the form of the Prospex 1970 Diver’s Re-Creation Limited Edition SLA033.

Fun fact: while in character as Colonel Kurtz in the movie, Marlon Brando wore a Rolex GMT-Master on a tropic strap but strangely, without a bezel.

Jaeger-LeCoultre – Superhero Movies

At first glance, Jaeger-LeCoultre watches in superhero movies may seem like a peculiar pairing. After all, the luxury Swiss watch brand is known for classic design cues and masterful mechanical movements while the superhero movie genre is associated with comic book characters and over-the-top special effects. However, if we dig a little deeper into the characters that wear Jaeger-LeCoultre watches in these movies, it makes complete sense.

First up is Bruce Wayne a.k.a. Batman. While at night he may be the caped crusader, during daylight hours he’s a billionaire who is part philanthropist and part head honcho of the Wayne Enterprise conglomerate. In the three films that make up the ‘Dark Knight’ Trilogy, Bruce Wayne (played by Christian Bale) wears a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Grande Date in stainless steel with an elegant brown leather strap—an understated choice for a man with such wealth.

Yet another billionaire boss of his own business empire, Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr.) is head of Stark Enterprises but to most, the wealthy inventor is better known as Iron Man. A much more flamboyant character than Bruce Wayne, Tony Stark’s Jaeger-LeCoultre of choice is the sporty and complicated AMVOX3 Tourbillon GMT as seen in the movie ‘Iron Man 2’. The impressive platinum and ceramic watch is part of the special AMVOX collection comprising of timepieces designed in honor of the (now defunct) Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin partnership. Given the connection with the sports car, it’s only fitting that the AMVOX3 is presented on a super cool leather rally strap with perforated holes—a style of watch strap that takes design inspiration from vintage driving gloves.

Dr. Stephen Strange may not be a billionaire but he is an ultra-successful New York City neurosurgeon with exquisite taste in watches. In the 2016 superhero film ‘Doctor Strange’, there is a scene where Dr. Stephen Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) opens a drawer filled with luxury watches spinning around on watch winders. Deciding among a bevy of beautiful timepieces including a Rolex Daytona, a TAG Heuer Monaco, a red Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, the good doctor settles on wearing a white gold Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual paired with a black leather strap.

IWC Watches (And Others) – Top Gun: Maverick

If you were one of the millions of moviegoers that watched ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (2022), then you would have no doubt (as a watch enthusiast) noticed all the top timepieces in the film. The sequel picks up 30 years after we first met Navy aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell—and we soon find out, some things haven’t changed.

For instance, Tom Cruise’s character Maverick rides the same motorcycle and wears the exact same aviator glasses, bomber jacket, and blacked-out Porsche Design Chronograph 1 in this blockbuster sequel as in the original ‘Top Gun’ film. According to an interview Tom Cruise did with BBC 1 Radio, he borrowed the watch from producer Jerry Bruckheimer to make the movie and had to swiftly return it when filming wrapped up.

Another notable watch in the movie is worn by Jennifer Connelly, who played the role of Penny Benjamin. She wears a vintage Rolex Explorer ref. 1016, which is an incredibly thoughtful pick given that she also owns a vintage Porsche 911. It’s clear that the “admiral’s daughter” has an appreciation for beautiful older gear.

Aside from the watches by Porsche Design and Rolex, this movie, which was 2022’s highest-grossing, heavily features IWC watches. As you may know, IWC makes watches for the real-life TOPGUN (officially known as the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor (SFTI) program), issued to instructors and students.

These special-edition IWC “SFTI: watches, which are available in time-only and chronograph versions, are seen on the wrists of Rooster (Miles Teller), Hangman (Glen Powell), Bob (Lewis Pullman), and Phoenix (Monica Barbaro) throughout the action-packed movie. Plus, a super cool instructor IWC stopwatch makes an appearance on screen too.

Rolex GMT-Master II Pepsi – The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

The Wes Anderson movie, ‘The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou’ (2004), tells the tale of renowned oceanographer Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) seeking revenge on a rare shark that ate one of his crewmembers. Ned Plimpton (Owen Wilson), who believes that Steve Zissou is his father, joins the mission as the chief financier. Ned Plimpton is a pilot; so, it was a great choice on behalf of the movie crew to have him wear a Rolex GMT-Master with a red and blue “Pepsi” bezel—a watch that was originally designed for commercial airline pilots. The specific model used in the movie is the GMT-Master II ref. 16710, in case you’re wondering.

The perfect watch casting doesn’t end there. Bill Murray as Steve Zissou (a character that lovingly honors Jacques Cousteau, hence the red beanie) wears a Vostok Amphibia dive watch. Yes, while Jacques Cousteau famously wore more luxurious diving watches like the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, Rolex Submariner, and Omega Ploprof, Steve Zissou is down on his luck, so the much more affordable Vostok Amphibia diver is fitting.

Wes Anderson is known for his incredible attention to detail and it shows with the watches that appear in this movie.

Casio G-Shock DW-5600C-1V – Speed

We’re dialing back to the 1990s with the blockbuster, ‘Speed’ (1994), starring Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, and Dennis Hopper. Along with these three well-known Hollywood actors, the Casio G-Shock DW-5600C-1V watch (worn by Jack Traven portrayed by Keanu Reeves) also plays a pivotal role in this film where time is crucial. As a result of this prominent role, the DW-5600C-1V is affectionately known as the “Speed G-Shock.”

The quintessential G-Shock, the DW-5600C-1V, with its recognizable case silhouette, black colorway, stainless steel inner case, screw-lock caseback, and resin strap, originated in 1987 and was discontinued sometime in the mid-1990s.

It’s been reported that the watch wasn’t a part of the movie’s props but it was in fact, Keanu Reeves’ personal watch.

Vintage Heuer Carrera Watches – Barbie

The biggest movie of 2023 was ‘Barbie’, which became an absolute phenomenon worldwide. The film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. Since Ryan Gosling was recently named a brand ambassador of TAG Heuer, it wouldn’t be surprising if the actor picked a couple of new models to wear in the movie. However, it was three vintage Heuer watches that showed up on screen – at the same time! That’s right, Ken wears three watches at once (we won’t tell you in detail why to avoid any spoilers but at some point during the movie, he realized that knowing the time is important).

According to TAG Heuer, “Gosling handpicked three gold timepieces to accentuate his bold persona.” The first of the three watches is the 1971 Heuer Carrera ref. 1158 CHN paired with an 18k gold Milanese bracelet. Following that, there’s the 1974 Heuer Carrera 110.515 with a barrel-shaped gold case combined with a gold three-link bracelet. The last is also a vintage gold Heuer Carrera (the ref. 2448 NT) but it’s a little more understated thanks to its black leather strap.

Wearing a trio of gold vintage Heuer watches gives off major Kenergy. In Gosling’s own words, “I’m sure you’re all aware of the Coco Chanel rule: before you leave the house, you take one thing off. The Ken Rule is you put three things on.”

Fake Richard Mille Watch – Don’t Look Up

Released in December 2021, the Netflix movie ‘Don’t Look Up’ caused quite a stir among audiences and critics for its satirical portrayal of the media and politicians’ disinterest in the plight of two astronomers warning of an incoming comet that will destroy the planet.

Beyond those who watched the movie, the film also had the watch community chattering too because Jonah Hill, who played Jason Orlean, Chief of Staff and President Orlean’s son, wore a fake Richard Mille watch.

That’s right, a replica of a Richard Skull watch, which if it were real, is valued over $500,000. According to Susan Matheson, the costume designer behind the film, it was Jonah Hill’s idea for his character to wear the RM52-01 Skull Tourbillon. But insurance would be a problem if something happened to the half-a-million-dollar-plus watch so they settled on using a replica as a prop instead.

In the end, the fake watch fits the movie character’s shallow and fake personality, so it somehow works!

Fun Fact: Meryl Streep who plays President Janie Orlean (Jason’s mom) wears a solid gold Piaget Extremely Lady watch, which is similar to the one Jackie Kennedy wore when she was the First Lady.

Citizen Watch – Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood

‘Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood’ (2019) was yet another hit for Quentin Tarantino and it follows the tale of fading actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Set in 1969 Los Angeles, the story also incorporates the real-life horrific murder of actress Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and others at the hands of the Manson Family — but with a Tarantino twist.

In the movie, Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth wears a gold-colored Citizen “Bullhead: Challenge Timer chronograph on a large brown bund strap. The piece also features a gold and black “Panda” style dial. The distinctive bullhead case shape is characterized by the duo of chronograph pushers placed on top of the case that resemble horns. But just as important (at least for watch enthusiasts) is the impressive flyback Caliber 8110 self-winding chronograph movement that powers the watch.

While the watch actually came out in 1972 and wouldn’t have existed during the period the movie takes place, the design of the watch fits Booth’s style perfectly. We’ll let this one pass even if it’s period-incorrect because the watch is awesome and looks great on screen. Plus, Citizen re-issued the Challenge Timer a few years back, which makes us wonder if the film caused some interest in this early Citizen automatic chronograph despite the miscast.
