Let’s take a look at how to remove the straps from your Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa 3 or newer, as well as install your new ones.
Let’s start by removing the straps you have currently installed.
Start by turning the Fitbit over so that the back of the device is facing you.
You’ll notice a small button with a raised lip near the edge of the device where the strap is connected.
To remove one strap, use the edge of your fingernail to push the raised lip on the button towards the strap. While the lip is pushed inwards, pull the strap away from the device at the same time. The strap will come loose from the device.
Repeat the process with the other strap, and you’ve now removed the strap from your Fitbit Sense or Versa.
Installing your new strap is very simple.
Take the shorter piece, which often has the buckle on it, and positioning it near the top side of your Fitbit.
Insert the end of the strap into notch of the device, and it should click into place.
Repeat the process with the other piece of the strap.
Give both ends of the strap a gentle tug to make sure everything is secure and you’re all done.

Let’s take a look at how to remove the straps from your Fitbit Inspire, as well as install your new ones.
Let’s start by removing the straps you have currently installed.
Start by turning the Fitbit over so that the back of the device is facing you.
Next, you’ll notice that there are these small metal levers right where the strap connects to the device. Each lever is positioned closer to one edge of strap.
To remove one strap, use the edge of your fingernail to pull the lever away from the edge of the strap towards the middle. While the lever is pulled inwards, pull the strap away from the device at the same time. The strap will come loose from the device.
Repeat the process with the other strap, and you’ve now removed the strap from your Fitbit Inspire.
To install your new strap, we’ll start by taking the shorter piece, which often has the buckle on it, and positioning it near the top side of your Fitbit.
Notice the pin sticking out from the side opposite the lever. Insert this side of the pin into the small hole on the device.
Next, pull the lever inwards with your nail, and position the other corner of the strap into the notch of your Fitbit, and then release the lever.
Make sure both ends of the pin are securely locked in place, then repeat the process with the other piece of the strap.
Give both ends of the strap a gentle tug to make sure everything is secure and you’re all done.

Let’s take a look at how to install smartwatch adapters onto your watch strap.
In this video, we’ll be using Apple Watch adapters, but the same process is used for any other adapters, including Fitbit, Garmin, Samsung and others.
If your watch strap has standard spring bars, you’ll want to begin by inserting one corner of the strap into the adapter, while inserting the spring bar into the small hole inside the adapter.
Next, line up the other end of the spring bar to the other hole, and use a spring bar tool to compress the spring bar.
While compressed, push the other corner of the spring bar into place, and allow the spring bar to click into the hole.
Now repeat the process for the other adapter and other half of the watch strap.
Gently tug on the adapter to make sure everything is securely in place.
If your watch has quick-release spring bars, the process is very similar to using standard spring bars.
Begin by inserting one corner of the strap into the adapter, while inserting the spring bar into the small hole inside the adapter.
Next, line up the other end of the spring bar to the other hole. Use your fingernail to pull the small quick-release lever towards the center of the strap to compress the spring bar.
While compressed, push the other corner of the spring bar into place, and allow the spring bar to click into the hole.
Now repeat the process for the other adapter and other half of the watch strap.
Gently tug on the adapter to make sure everything is securely in place, and you’re all done.

Let’s take a look at how to install a Rolex-style clasp on a compatible strap.
First, we’ll install the shorter piece of the strap.
Begin by using a small, flathead screwdriver to remove the outer pin on the end of the clasp.
After unscrewing the pin, you can use the tip of the screwdriver to push the pin out completely.
Next, take the short piece of the strap, and insert the extruded end in the notch where the removed pin was.
Then, insert the pin back into the clasp, ensuring that it also goes through the hole on end of the strap.
Using the screwdriver once again, screw the pin back into place to secure the short piece of the strap.
To install the long piece of the strap, begin by opening the clasp, by using your fingernail to pry open the small latch.
On the other end of the clasp, you’ll notice sets of holes on the inside of the clasp cover.
Take the long piece of the strap in hand, and insert one end of the spring bar into one of the holes, according to the desired length adjustment.
Then, using a spring bar tool, compress the other end of the spring bar, and let it snap into the corresponding hole.
You can now re-close the clasp, and the installation is complete.
Gently tug on both ends of the strap to make sure everything is secure, and you’re all done!

If you’ve ever wanted to give your timepiece a fresh look or replace worn-out hardware, learning how to remove a watch buckle is an essential watch maintenance skill. Whether you’re swapping out a standard tang buckle for a deployant clasp or upgrading to match your watch band finish, it’s a simple process you can do at home with the right tools.

To replace or change the buckle on your watch strap, you’ll need a spring bar removal tool and a new buckle that fits your band correctly.

Measuring for the Right Buckle:

Before you begin, measure the width of your watch strap at the buckle end to know what size buckle you need.

For example, if your watch band measures 20mm at the buckle end, you’ll need a 20mm buckle.

Keep in mind that the buckle width is often different from the width at the watch head, as many straps taper toward the buckle end.

You should also check the thorn width (the small tongue that fits into the strap holes). A heavy-duty pre-V buckle may not fit a strap that originally had a thinner tang buckle because the cutout for the thorn may be too small.

Now that you know how to choose the right fit, let’s get started.

STEP 1 – Removing the Old Buckle

Now that you know what to look for, let’s walk through how to remove a watch buckle safely.

Use the forked end of your spring bar removal tool to compress the spring bar securing the buckle to the watch strap. Insert the tool between the strap and the edge of the buckle so that the forked end hugs the spring bar. Push inward toward the strap to release the spring bar from the buckle.

Tip: Some buckles feature small drilled holes on the sides to make this process easier. If yours does, use the pin pusher end of the tool and press into the hole to release the spring bar. This provides more control and reduces the risk of scratching your watch band.

Next, pull the spring bar out completely. If it’s tight, gently push it out with the pin end of your tool. Once the spring bar is removed, the buckle’s thorn (the metal tongue) will come free or can easily be lifted out by hand.

Your old watch buckle is now fully removed and ready to be replaced.

STEP 2 – Installing the New Buckle

Now that you’ve mastered how to change a watch buckle, it’s time to install your new one.

Insert the spring bar through one side of the watch strap until it reaches the cutout.

Next, place the thorn into the cutout and hold it in place while you push the spring bar through the rest of the way. Use the pin pusher if you need help guiding it.

Attach the buckle by catching one side of it onto the spring bar.

Use the forked end of the tool to compress the other side of the spring bar and slide the buckle into place until you feel it click securely.

Give the watch band a gentle tug to ensure everything is secure and the new buckle is properly installed.

Common Questions

Can You Change the Buckle on a Watch Strap?

Yes — you can change the buckle on a watch strap as long as the new buckle matches the correct size at the strap’s buckle end. Most watch bands, especially leather, silicone, and nylon styles, use removable buckles that can easily be swapped with a spring bar tool.

If your watch strap tapers, be sure to measure the buckle end specifically before purchasing a new buckle.

Final Tips

Always measure your watch strap at the buckle end for the correct size.

Work slowly on a soft surface to avoid scratches on your watch or watch band.

Consider upgrading to a deployant clasp for added comfort and a cleaner, dressier look.

Replacing or removing a watch buckle is a quick and rewarding way to refresh your favorite timepiece — no jeweler required.

Shop replacement buckles and watch bands at StrapsCo.com to find the perfect fit for your watch.
